In the summer of 2015, the life of 33-year-old Shimone Gillins, a male from Sumter, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On a Friday evening in July, law enforcement and emergency medical services were called to a vacant house in the 600 block of South Harvin Street. Behind the abandoned dwelling, they discovered Gillins's body. An autopsy would later reveal that he had died from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
The investigation into his death quickly pointed towards a suspect.
Leads developed at the scene identified 24-year-old Qwinton Diquan Harper, a man from Dalzell, as the alleged shooter. The following Saturday evening, Harper turned himself in to the Sumter Police Department. Authorities stated that the motive for the killing was believed to be retaliation for a fight that had occurred between Gillins and Harper several weeks prior. The two men were described as acquaintances who were both thought to be involved in ongoing criminal activity.
Following his surrender, Harper was charged with murder and taken into custody at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
