On a Sunday afternoon in Sumter, South Carolina, the life of 17-year-old Joshua Goodman was tragically cut short. On April 15, 2018, the male high school junior and three-sport athlete at Crestwood High School was found with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of a Peach Street apartment complex. He was rushed to Palmetto Health Tuomey but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Goodman was a celebrated member of his school community, playing defensive end for the varsity football team, outfield and catcher for the baseball team, and participating in shot put and discus for the track team. His death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving his family, friends, and teammates to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a promising young life.
The investigation into Joshua Goodman's death revealed a pre-planned robbery that turned fatal. Goodman had reportedly arranged to meet five individuals to purchase marijuana. However, the group had conspired to rob him. During the attempted robbery, a struggle ensued, and Goodman was shot. The Sumter Police Department swiftly identified and arrested five suspects in connection with the homicide. The alleged shooter, 21-year-old Jaelon Markell Jackson of Columbia, turned himself in to authorities. He faced charges of murder, attempted armed robbery, conspiracy, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Four other individuals were also taken into custody and faced serious charges for their involvement in the planned robbery and subsequent death of Joshua Goodman. Diontre Brown, 18, of Blythewood, and Dequan Lamont Washington, 21, of Sumter, were charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, and conspiracy. Shanice Octavia Bradley, 20, also of Sumter, faced the same charges. A 16-year-old, Joshua Smith Jr. of Sumter, was charged as an adult with accessory before the fact of armed robbery, accessory before the fact of murder, and conspiracy. During a court hearing, the suspects were denied bond. The tragic incident highlighted the devastating consequences of a robbery that escalated to violence, ending the life of a beloved student-athlete and forever altering the lives of all involved.
