On the evening of March 21, 2024, in Dillon, South Carolina, tragedy struck when Quentin Stafford Berry, a 38-year-old man from Hamer, was fatally shot. The Dillon County Sheriff's Office received a call at approximately 9:48 p.m. reporting gunfire on Amherst Court. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Mr. Berry suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of first responders to render aid, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The initial stages of the investigation into the death of the male victim prompted a significant response from law enforcement. The Dillon County Sheriff's Office, along with several other agencies including the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office, the Fourth Circuit Solicitor's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Assistant United States Attorney's Office, launched an extensive and collaborative investigation. As part of their efforts to gather information, a $2,500 reward was offered for any tips that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the homicide.
After weeks of thorough investigation, a breakthrough in the case came on May 13, 2024, when the Dillon County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a suspect. Monte Lee Armstrong, a 63-year-old man from Summerton, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of Quentin Berry. Armstrong is facing multiple charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Dillon County Detention Center to await a bond hearing. Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
