In the summer of 2017, a young man's life was cut short in an act of violence that stemmed from a family dispute. Octavius Richardson, a 21-year-old Black male from Dillon, South Carolina, was fatally shot on July 5, 2017. The incident occurred in the Newtown community of Dillon, outside an apartment on McNeil Street.
On that tragic day, Richardson had attempted to intervene in a physical altercation involving his younger sisters.
Described as a protective older brother, his efforts to de-escalate the situation ultimately led to his death. His grandmother recalled that he was always one to come to the aid of his sisters, a characteristic that tragically placed him in harm's way.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Machale Olando Bethea, a 22-year-old from Dillon, was identified as the individual responsible for Richardson's death. In a surprising turn, Bethea turned himself in to the Dillon County Sheriff's Office on the very same day as the shooting.
Following his surrender, Bethea was arrested and formally charged with the murder of Octavius Richardson. His bond was later set at $100,000, and his release was contingent upon strict conditions, including house arrest and the use of a GPS ankle monitor to track his whereabouts. The swift arrest brought a small measure of solace to a family grieving an immense and sudden loss.
