In Jackson, Mississippi, on a late February day, the life of 36-year-old Twyla Cyera Maxwell Weems was tragically cut short. On February 27, 2023, Weems, a Black female, was fatally shot at her residence on South Pine Lea Drive. At the time of her death, she was four months pregnant with a son she had named Kyson Kristofer Weems.
Authorities were called to the scene, and her 41-year-old husband, Ernest Weems, was arrested. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, one for the death of his wife and another for their unborn child. During his initial court appearance, a judge denied him bond, and he remained in custody to await trial for the double homicide.
