In the late hours of a Thursday in Jackson, Mississippi, the life of 23-year-old Chelsie Lynn Kirschten, a white female, was tragically cut short. On August 17, 2017, Kirschten was behind the wheel of her white Pontiac G6, waiting at a traffic light at the intersection of Fortification Street and State Street. Accompanied by a female passenger, the moments of pause at the signal would become her last. An unidentified Black male, cloaked in dark clothing and brandishing a silver handgun, approached the driver's side of the vehicle.
Without warning, a single shot shattered the night and the driver's side window. The bullet struck Kirschten in the upper back, inflicting a fatal wound. As the assailant fled into the darkness on foot, the Pontiac rolled forward, continuing eastbound on Fortification Street before coming to a final stop near the interstate. When police and emergency services arrived at approximately 11:48 p.m., Chelsie Lynn Kirschten was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial investigation was unable to determine a motive for the seemingly random act of violence, which marked the city's 37th homicide of the year.
In the wake of the shooting, the Jackson Police Department and Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers issued pleas to the public for any information that could lead to the perpetrator's capture. The case was highlighted as a homicide, and it was later updated to reflect that suspects had been taken into custody.
Xavier Johnson was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Chelsie Kirschten. Following his arrest, the case proceeded through the legal system. In October 2018, Xavier Johnson was convicted of first-degree murder. The court sentenced him to life in prison for his role in the senseless killing. Johnson later appealed his conviction, but in April 2020, the Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court's decision, ensuring that he would remain incarcerated for the death of Chelsie Lynn Kirschten.
