On a tragic spring morning in Jackson, Mississippi, the life of 29-year-old Ebony Harvey was cut short. The Black/African American mother of two was enjoying the early hours of Sunday, May 11, 2014, on a porch on Wilshire Avenue with two other individuals when the scene was shattered by gunfire. A man is reported to have driven up to the residence and opened fire on the three people gathered there. While the other two victims, a man and a woman, sustained injuries, they ultimately survived the violent encounter. Harvey, however, was fatally wounded.
In the wake of the shooting, friends and family mourned the loss of a woman they described as a loving mother. The investigation into her death would reveal a heartbreaking detail: Ebony Harvey was not the intended target of the assailant. She was, by all accounts, an innocent bystander caught in a senseless act of violence that left her two children without their mother. Her funeral services were held at the Hanging Moss Church of Christ in Jackson, and she was laid to rest at Good Hope Cemetery in Florence, Mississippi.
