In a tragic turn of events on May 18, 2023, 18-year-old Tenneson Vaughn Leslie Jr. of Greenbelt, Maryland, was fatally shot at the Wheaton Metro Station. The male victim's life was cut short following a confrontation that escalated into violence.
The incident began when two groups of young men, previously unknown to each other, engaged in a physical altercation on an escalator within the metro station.
As the dispute intensified, one of the individuals, later identified as 16-year-old Emmanuel Leonard Simmonds of Gaithersburg, brandished a firearm. As Leslie and his friends attempted to flee the scene, Simmonds fired, striking Leslie in the back of the head.
Montgomery County Police officers responded to the scene and found Leslie unresponsive near the bottom of the escalator. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The entire incident was captured on the station's surveillance video, which proved to be a critical piece of evidence in the subsequent investigation.
Within a week of the shooting, on May 24, 2023, law enforcement officials arrested Emmanuel Simmonds at his residence. Despite his age, Simmonds was charged as an adult with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and firearm-related offenses. A 14-year-old male was also taken into custody and charged as a juvenile with being an accessory after the fact for his involvement in the events surrounding Leslie's death.
On December 28, 2023, Emmanuel Simmonds pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Subsequently, on July 29, 2024, the 17-year-old was sentenced to 35 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised probation upon his release. The judge recommended that Simmonds serve his sentence in the Patuxent Youthful Offenders program. During the legal proceedings, it was also revealed that at the time of the shooting, Simmonds was under investigation for other unrelated crimes, including robbery and sexual assault.
