In the afternoon hours of April 25, 2022, a distressing scene unfolded in a quiet Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood. Jomorion Gordon, a 19-year-old Black male, was found in a car that had veered off the road and collided with a tree in the 8300 block of 4th Avenue South. The initial call to Birmingham Police, at approximately 2:00 p.m., was for a vehicle collision, but first responders quickly discovered a more grim reality.
Gordon was inside the vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency crews from Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service worked to provide aid and transported him to UAB Hospital. Despite their efforts, Jomorion Gordon succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The subsequent investigation by the Birmingham Police Department suggested a tragic sequence of events. Detectives believe that Gordon had been shot at another, undetermined location. In a desperate attempt to save his own life, he tried to drive himself to the hospital. Unfortunately, he lost control of his vehicle during this effort, leading to the crash that ultimately brought his plight to the attention of authorities.
His death marked the city of Birmingham's 38th homicide investigation of 2022. In the time that has passed since that spring afternoon, the case has remained without a resolution. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. The Birmingham Police Department continues to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest and bring a measure of justice to Jomorion Gordon's family.
