On July 24, 2018, 37-year-old Robert Atkins was shot and killed in Birmingham, Alabama, in what authorities soon determined to be a homicide. Atkins, a resident of the city, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 3200 block of 30th Avenue North, an area that had previously seen incidents of violence. Law enforcement responded to the scene after reports of gunfire, but despite efforts to save his life, Atkins was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
