In a tragic turn of events at what should have been a solemn occasion, 30-year-old Ronald Steven Banks of Washington, D.C., was shot and killed on June 6, 2023. The male victim was attending a funeral service at Washington National Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland, where he was serving as a pallbearer for 10-year-old Arianna Davis, who herself was a victim of gun violence.
The funeral was tragically interrupted when Wilson Chavis, the 48-year-old owner of the funeral service company handling the burial, confronted Banks and another woman. The dispute, which stemmed from a long-standing business rivalry with a second funeral service company that Banks and the woman were affiliated with, quickly escalated. Witnesses reported that Chavis became agitated, leading to a confrontation with funeral attendees.
In the midst of the argument, Chavis pulled out a gun and fired two shots. One bullet struck and killed Ronald Steven Banks, while the other grazed the woman he was with.
Banks was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Following the shooting, Chavis fled the cemetery in his vehicle but was apprehended by a Morningside Police Department officer a short time later.
Wilson Chavis was arrested and subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as attempted first and second-degree murder and other related charges. In February 2025, a jury found Chavis guilty of second-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and reckless endangerment. He was later sentenced to 60 years in prison, with all but 25 years suspended. During the trial, Chavis expressed that he was saddened by what happened but did not show remorse, claiming he acted in self-defense.
