On a Saturday evening in Silver Spring, Maryland, a violent altercation inside a popular restaurant tragically cut short the life of 34-year-old Marvin Jefferson. The events unfolded on November 4, 2023, at the America's Best Wings located in the White Oak Shopping Center. An argument that began inside the establishment escalated and spilled outside, culminating in a fatal shooting that also left another man wounded.
Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 5:50 p.m., Montgomery
County police discovered Jefferson outside the restaurant suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim, who was also found nearby, was transported to a hospital in critical condition but was later released. The preliminary investigation suggested that an altercation between the victims and a suspect inside the restaurant preceded the shooting. The suspect fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, prompting an intensive search.
Nearly a month after the incident, a significant breakthrough was made in the case. On December 2, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 33-year-old Markus Tyrell Dowdy in Takoma Park. Dowdy was identified as the primary suspect in Jefferson's death. Investigators revealed that the shooting was an act of retaliation stemming from a dispute that had occurred a week prior, during which Jefferson had reportedly punched Dowdy outside a liquor store. Surveillance footage from the restaurant and cellphone video from the earlier altercation helped to identify Dowdy as the shooter.
Markus Tyrell Dowdy, a known gang member with prior felony convictions, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and multiple firearms offenses. In March 2025, a jury found Dowdy guilty of the charges. During the trial, evidence showed that Dowdy chased Jefferson out of the restaurant, firing multiple shots. After Jefferson fell to the ground, Dowdy proceeded to pistol-whip him. For his crimes, Dowdy faces a potential sentence of up to 125 years in prison, with his sentencing scheduled for June 13, 2025.
