In the early morning hours of December 2, 2022, a day that should have been a celebration, 29-year-old Nathaniel Potts was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Summit Hills apartment complex on 16th Street in Silver Spring, Maryland. The male victim, a music artist known as Nate SkyWalker, was returning home after celebrating his birthday when the tragic event unfolded. He was discovered with gunshot wounds around 3:05 a.m.
and, despite being transported to a nearby hospital for life-threatening injuries, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Potts, a father to a 10-year-old daughter at the time, was described by Montgomery County Police as a 'very deliberate, premeditated' homicide. Detectives believed more than one suspect was involved in the crime. According to police, Potts was confronted by a suspect after exiting his vehicle. As he attempted to make his way to his apartment, he was shot. His family, including his older brother and sister, described him as a 'pretty remarkable person' and a 'family man first,' and pleaded with the community for any information that could lead to an arrest.
For nearly three years, the case remained a focus for the Major Crimes Division's Cold Case Section. A breakthrough came in September 2025 when investigators identified 47-year-old Jason Duane Moore as a suspect. On September 2, 2025, Moore, a resident of Silver Spring, was arrested by members of the Montgomery County Police and the U.S. Marshals Task Force. He has been charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. Following his arrest, Moore was taken to the Central Processing Unit. The police have not elaborated on what specifically led them to identify Moore as a suspect in the long-unsolved case. Authorities have continued to ask for the public's help, indicating that there may be a reward for information that leads to further arrests.
