On Christmas Eve of 2017, a young Hispanic male named Jose Herrera Guzman, aged 18, was fatally shot in Silver Spring, Maryland. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace. First responders arrived at 1010 Quebec Terrace to find Herrera deceased outside from multiple gunshot wounds. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later officially ruled his death a homicide.
At the time of his death, police reported that Herrera had no known address.
Just two days prior to his death, Herrera had been released from jail on a $100 bond. He had been arrested in October 2017 for trespassing and fourth-degree burglary. He was discovered in a vacant house on University Boulevard East that was reportedly being used as a hideout by alleged members of the MS-13 gang. His release came despite a pending Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer that had been lodged against him.
Following the shooting on December 24, Montgomery County Police officers established a perimeter and utilized a K9 unit to try and track the suspect or suspects. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two Hispanic males dressed in black fleeing the area. Despite the search efforts, authorities were unable to locate any suspects, and no arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation. The Montgomery County Major Crimes Division continues to investigate the homicide, exploring various leads, including a possible gang-related motive stemming from Herrera's alleged connection to MS-13.
