In the afternoon hours of a Tuesday in Milwaukee, tragedy struck the life of 19-year-old Dayvon Shakur Smith, a Black / African American male. On September 12, 2023, near the intersection of 19th and Clarke, a familiar neighborhood spot for Smith, his life was cut short by gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Smith, remembered by his family as a goofy and protective individual, was a father to a one-year-old daughter.
The events leading to the fatal shooting reportedly began with a physical altercation. Witnesses stated that Smith was involved in a fistfight with another individual and appeared to be winning. The person he was fighting with then allegedly went into a nearby house, only to emerge with a firearm and open fire. Investigators at the scene recovered 29 bullet casings, all from the same weapon. The shots were fired in the direction of Smith and a nearby minivan. An autopsy later revealed that Smith had been shot 13 times.
In the wake of the shooting, Milwaukee police began their investigation, and a suspect was soon identified. Dequan Williams, a 17-year-old, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide in connection with Smith's death. At the time of the incident, Williams was on GPS monitoring for a prior conviction and allegedly removed his ankle monitor shortly after the homicide. In addition to the homicide charge, Williams also faced two counts of possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent. His cash bond was set at $150,000.
Dayvon Smith's family was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man who was one of eight siblings. His mother, who expressed her deep sorrow and desire for justice, pleaded with the community to put an end to gun violence. The family, who described Smith as a loving and smart individual, had been just days away from securing a life insurance policy for him. They now faced the unexpected financial burden of arranging his funeral, for which a GoFundMe campaign was established. The loss was deeply felt by his young daughter, who, according to her grandmother, cried through the night after her father's death.
