On a tragic Memorial Day weekend in 2017, the life of Jeffrey R. Horton, a 31-year-old Black/African American male, was cut short by gun violence in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On the evening of May 28th, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Horton was in the 4700 block of N. Hopkins Street when he was fatally shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries, becoming one of several victims of a particularly violent holiday weekend in the city.
The investigation into
Horton's death led to an arrest, revealing a painful family connection to the tragedy. Witnesses reported seeing Horton with his cousin, DaVaughn Ray Horton, in the parking lot of a tavern shortly before the shooting. According to a criminal complaint, one witness stated that DaVaughn, who was 26 at the time, drew a gun and fired without any apparent conflict between the two cousins.
Following the shooting, DaVaughn Horton fled to Alabama. However, he was later apprehended by authorities and extradited back to Wisconsin to face charges in connection with his cousin's death. He was charged with second-degree reckless homicide. Pleading not guilty to the charges, DaVaughn Horton was held in the Milwaukee County Jail on a $50,000 bail as the case proceeded through the legal system.
