Cynthia Halk, a 38-year-old white female, was found dead on July 29, 2001, in Chicago, Illinois. Her partially clothed body was discovered inside a garbage can in an alley near Clark and Division Streets. At the time of her death, Halk was known to struggle with drug addiction and was involved in sex work. She had also been diagnosed with epilepsy, which affected her ability to maintain employment, though she remained active in caring for her grandchildren.
On the day of her death, Halk
had been dropped off by her family at Provident Hospital on the South Side of Chicago for treatment related to her epilepsy. The family had instructed the hospital to call them once she was ready to be picked up, but that call never came. Three days later, her body was found discarded in a trash container, a discovery that deeply shocked her family and community.
The investigation into Halk’s death revealed that she had encountered Kevin Taylor, a 27-year-old African American male, who was employed as a cook at The Cheesecake Factory on Michigan Avenue. According to prosecutors, Taylor approached Halk after his work shift and offered her $10 for sex. During the encounter, Halk attempted to leave, reportedly experiencing an epileptic seizure. Taylor then strangled her, retrieved the $10 bill, and disposed of her body in the garbage can.
Taylor’s arrest came after a timecard bearing his name was found beneath the body of another victim, Bernadine Blunt, in an abandoned building. This discovery led police to connect him to a series of murders involving drug-addicted sex workers. Taylor ultimately confessed to the murder of Cynthia Halk and three other women: Bernadine Blunt Ola Mae Wallace and Diane Jordan. All victims were African American females involved in sex work and were killed by strangulation between June and August 2001.
In January 2006, Taylor was convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Cynthia Halk. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Later that year, he pleaded guilty to the other three murders to avoid the death penalty and received life imprisonment without parole. A fifth victim, Phyllis Robinson, survived an attack by Taylor and was able to identify him in a police lineup, further solidifying the case against him. Taylor is currently incarcerated at Menard Correctional Center in Illinois.
