In the early morning hours of September 13, 2021, the life of 16-year-old Rydell DaRonn Ards-King, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short by gun violence in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A sophomore at John Marshall High School, Rydell was found fatally shot near the intersection of Sherman Boulevard and Burleigh Street. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear to investigators.
The incident was another stark reminder of the gun violence impacting the city's
youth, with Rydell being the 19th homicide victim aged 17 or younger in Milwaukee that year. The community was left shaken, with residents near the scene expressing their fear and frustration over the persistent violence in their neighborhood.
In the wake of his death, family and friends gathered for a vigil at the site of the shooting to honor Rydell's memory. Tragically, this gathering of mourners was also marred by violence when a second shooting erupted, injuring five people. The victims of the vigil shooting, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, included two 15-year-old girls, a 30-year-old man, a 35-year-old man, and a 64-year-old man.
