On the evening of September 10, 2023, a sense of normalcy was shattered in the 1300 block of Northeast 8th Street in Oklahoma City. Earlier in the day, Quantrell Steele, a 25-year-old Black male, had been enjoying time at Pitts Park. Later, he and some companions made a stop at a 7-Eleven before heading to the Tree Lounge, where they spent some time in the parking lot. After leaving the lounge, they were driving south on Lincoln Boulevard and had just turned onto 8th Street when the night took a violent turn.
Suddenly, another vehicle pulled alongside the car Steele was a passenger in, and a barrage of gunfire erupted. At least 50 rounds were fired in the drive-by shooting, striking not only the vehicle but also two or three nearby homes. Amid the chaos, Steele was struck by the gunfire. In a desperate attempt to save his life, he was driven to the Norman Regional Moore Medical Center.
Despite the urgent medical attention he received, Quantrell Steele succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The shooting marked the 57th homicide in Oklahoma City for 2023. Described as a father of two who was trying to turn his life around and regain custody of his children, his death left a void in the lives of his loved ones. The Oklahoma City Police Department opened an investigation into the homicide, but as of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains unsolved, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of those responsible for the fatal shooting.
