In the heat of an August afternoon in Oklahoma City, tragedy struck on a busy street, forever altering the lives of those involved. On August 20, 2024, 17-year-old G’Rico Hutcherson, a Black male, was walking with another teenager in the 1200 block of NE 23rd Street. It was approximately 1:45 p.m. when the sound of gunfire shattered the daytime calm. When police arrived, they found G’Rico lying in a parking lot near the road; he had been fatally shot.
The second teenager was also found nearby with a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital with injuries they were expected to survive.
The investigation into the city's 62nd homicide of the year moved swiftly. Detectives with the Oklahoma City Police Department quickly developed leads, and by the next day, two arrests had been made in connection with the deadly shooting. The suspects were identified as 33-year-old Lundon Mitchell and 15-year-old Bryan Stubbs.
Lundon Mitchell was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a complaint of accessory to murder. Bryan Stubbs was booked into the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center on a murder complaint. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and contact the Homicide Tip Line, as the investigation is ongoing. In the wake of the violence, a wooden cross adorned with balloons, flowers, photos, and heartfelt notes from friends and loved ones marked the spot where G’Rico Hutcherson’s young life was cut short.
