On a cold Friday evening in Minneapolis, January 13, 2023, the life of 15-year-old Dwayne Scott Dzubay-Percy was cut tragically short. A member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, the male teenager was a freshman at Patrick Henry High School where he was an honor roll student. Known to his loved ones as "Dweezy," he had a passion for football and basketball, earning numerous trophies in both sports.
He was also a former grass dancer and took great pride in his appearance.
That evening, at approximately 6:30 p.m., police responded to a single-vehicle crash in north Minneapolis. They discovered a Kia, which had been reported stolen earlier that day, crashed into a snowbank. Inside, in the driver's seat, they found Dwayne, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later ruled his death a homicide. Two other teenagers who were in the vehicle with him were unharmed.
Investigators believe the shooting was a drive-by incident, with authorities suspecting the shots were fired from another moving vehicle. The city's ShotSpotter system detected 14 rounds of gunfire from a moving target just a few blocks south of the crash site shortly before the incident occurred. Witnesses reported seeing a van chasing the Kia. Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station captured the van arriving just before Dwayne's vehicle and then following it as it left, leading up to the fatal encounter. The motive for the shooting is believed to be related to a gang or territory dispute. Two other teenage boys were taken into custody the same night after they returned to the scene of the crash, but it was not immediately clear if they were arrested.
In the course of their investigation, police identified two suspects. Nineteen-year-old Shawn K. Goodloe, the driver of the van, was charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder. In January 2024, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison. The alleged shooter was identified as 19-year-old Fabian Scott. Authorities located him in Cass County, North Dakota, where he was already in custody for a separate murder case. While being questioned, Scott admitted to firing the shots from the van. He was subsequently charged with three counts of second-degree murder in connection with Dwayne's death.
