A visit between childhood friends on a Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, took a tragic turn, ending a life and shattering a long-standing bond. On January 9, 2021, 58-year-old Bobby Evans, a Black/African American male, was at the home of his longtime friend, Glenn Douglas Smith. As the day wore on, the two men drank heavily, and a friendly gathering descended into a heated argument.
The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
The confrontation grew so intense that Evans reportedly tackled Smith to the floor inside a bedroom of the home. Smith's wife, who was present during the incident, intervened and attempted to de-escalate the situation by pushing Evans toward the front door to get him to leave.
Her efforts to separate the two men were tragically in vain. Moments after the initial physical struggle, Glenn Smith emerged from the bedroom armed with a gun. He fired a single, fatal shot, striking Evans in the head. When police responded to a 911 call from Smith's wife, they found Bobby Evans deceased inside the residence.
Glenn Douglas Smith, then 59, was taken into custody at the scene. His wife turned the firearm over to the authorities upon their arrival. During a subsequent interview with investigators, Smith admitted to his actions, simply stating, "I shot him." He was arrested and later charged by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office with second-degree murder for the death of his childhood friend.
