In the quiet hours of a Minneapolis night, just before midnight on December 18, 2022, the life of 57-year-old Willie James Hobbs, a Black male, was brought to a tragic and violent end in his own home. The residence, located in the 3100 block of Dupont Avenue North, became a crime scene after police responded to a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Hobbs with life-threatening injuries.
Despite the immediate efforts of first responders to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that Willie James Hobbs died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
The suspected shooter did not flee. Instead, officers found 71-year-old Charles Raymond Thomas, Hobbs' roommate, outside the house with relatives. In a startling admission, Thomas identified himself as the person who shot Hobbs and informed the police that the gun was located upstairs. Following his confession, Thomas was taken into custody and booked into the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause for murder. The subsequent investigation revealed a troubled relationship between the two men who shared a living space.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a narrative of conflict and simmering tension emerged. Thomas alleged that he had been the victim of harassment and bullying by Hobbs. This claim was offered as an explanation for the fatal encounter. According to the criminal complaint filed against him, Thomas expressed a degree of remorse for his actions, stating, "Nobody feels worse than I do about this. I didn't plan for this". Witnesses reported hearing the two men arguing earlier in the evening before the fatal shots were fired. After the shooting, Thomas did not call 911 himself but instead contacted family members, one of whom he told, "Son, I made a mistake. Hurry up now". When his son arrived, Thomas reportedly said that he "just snapped". Charles Raymond Thomas was subsequently charged with one count of intentional second-degree murder for the death of his roommate, Willie James Hobbs.
