On a cold evening of December 2, 2023, Darien Jamal Roberson, a 23-year-old Black male from Saint Paul, Minnesota, lost his life in a sudden act of violence. The tragic events unfolded in the parking lot of a strip mall in Edina, a suburb of Minneapolis. Darien was attending a birthday celebration for a mutual friend at a restaurant with a group of people, including the man who would ultimately take his life.
After the birthday dinner, a small group, including Darien and 21-year-old
Kavyon J. Madison of Minneapolis, went outside to the parking lot to take pictures. An argument erupted between the two men, reportedly stemming from comments Madison made about a deceased friend of Roberson's. Witnesses stated that Madison brought up the friend's overdose death from two years prior, suggesting the friend would still be alive if he had made better life choices. Roberson did not want to discuss the matter, but Madison persisted.
The verbal disagreement quickly escalated. Surveillance footage from the scene captured Madison putting his finger in Roberson's face. Roberson slapped his hand away and stepped back. At that moment, Madison pulled out a handgun and shot Roberson five times, striking him in the face, cheek, neck, shoulder, and chest. Darien Jamal Roberson collapsed and died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide.
Immediately following the shooting, witnesses restrained Madison until police arrived. Madison himself was one of the individuals who called 911, claiming that he had shot someone who "came at me," a statement that was not supported by the video evidence. Police found him at the scene, standing near a holstered handgun on the ground. Madison was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. In February 2025, Kavyon Madison pleaded guilty to the charge. A judge later sentenced him to 403 months in prison.
