On September 2, 2023, at approximately 1:10 a.m., Minneapolis police responded to reports of a shooting on the 800 block of Main Street NE. Upon arrival, officers found 34-year-old Shawn Deonta Torrence with life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:06 a.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Torrence died from multiple gunshot wounds, ruling his death a homicide.
Shortly after the
shooting, authorities discovered an abandoned vehicle engulfed in flames near the intersection of 18th Avenue NE and California Street NE, approximately ten blocks from the shooting scene. Around the same time, an attempted auto theft was reported near 17th Avenue NE and University Avenue NE, about five blocks from the vehicle fire. Investigators are exploring potential connections between these incidents and Torrence's death. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the Minneapolis Police Department continues to seek information from the public.
Torrence was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, known for his infectious laugh and generous spirit. He was the proprietor of Perfection Painting, a business he founded, through which he provided for his family, including his three children: Kamarion Antonio and Anastasya. In the wake of his passing, a GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with funeral expenses and to support his children, aiming to ensure they continue to feel secure and supported during this challenging time.
