Senior Police Officer William John Bill Jeffrey, aged 54, was tragically shot and killed on September 20, 2021, while serving a warrant in Houston, Texas. Officer Jeffrey, a 30-year veteran of the Houston Police Department and a U.S. Navy veteran, was part of a team executing an arrest warrant for a suspect named Deon Ledet at the Timber Ridge Apartment complex on Aeropark Drive.
As officers knocked on the door, a female answered and informed them that the suspect was inside.
When officers called for the suspect to come out, he opened fire without warning, striking Officer Jeffrey and another officer. The officers returned fire, killing the suspect on the scene. Officer Jeffrey was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Sergeant Vance, who was also shot, required surgery but survived.
The suspect, Deon Ledet, had two outstanding drug-related warrants and had previously forfeited bond on January 8, 2021. He used a Glock handgun that had been illegally converted to full automatic. The incident also resulted in injuries to a female subject and two children inside the residence, though the children were uninjured.
Officer Jeffrey is survived by his wife Susanne and daughter Lacie. His wife had recently retired from the Houston Police Department. The loss of Officer Jeffrey was deeply felt within the community and the police department, as he had dedicated three decades of service to law enforcement.
