Spencer Nichols, a 32-year-old male, tragically lost his life on February 15, 2022, in Houston, Texas. Nichols was killed by Kempsha L. Wilson, 28, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder. The incident occurred after Nichols tried to help his sister escape from an abusive relationship.
On Valentine's Day, the day before the shooting, Wilson and his girlfriend had a heated argument that escalated into physical violence.
Wilson choked and beat his girlfriend, prompting her to fire a shot at him to emphasize that she wanted him to leave. She then texted her brother, Spencer Nichols, for help. Nichols arrived and managed to get Wilson to leave, taking his sister and her two young daughters to his home for the night.
The next day, Nichols and his sister returned to the apartment with their children. Wilson showed up with a handgun and at least two other armed men. Nichols' sister attempted to pull out her pistol for self-defense, but Wilson took it away from her. Wilson confronted Nichols with a pistol in each hand, pistol-whipped him, and then placed the barrel of one of the firearms against Nichols' chest and shot him, killing him in front of his three children.
Detectives from the Homicide Division of the Houston Police Department investigated the shooting and charged Wilson, who was arrested nine days later on an unrelated narcotics charge before being charged with murder. Wilson's criminal history includes going to prison three times before this murder. The Harris County District Attorney's Office emphasized that domestic violence affects the entire family and can escalate to murder.
