In a quiet apartment complex in east Wichita, Kansas, the life of 25-year-old Sebastian Crawford, a White/Caucasian male, was abruptly ended on July 1, 2024. The morning calm was shattered at approximately 11:08 a.m. when emergency services received a call reporting a shooting at the Village Park Rockborough Apartments. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Crawford inside an apartment, having sustained a single gunshot wound.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The subsequent investigation by the Wichita Police Department quickly identified the individuals believed to be involved in the tragic event. It was determined that the shooting occurred after an argument between Crawford and his roommate. Inside the apartment at the time of the incident were several other people, including two juveniles, none of whom were physically harmed. An adult female who was also present was taken to a local hospital for a medical condition unrelated to the shooting.
In connection with the death of Sebastian Crawford, authorities arrested two individuals: 22-year-old Peter McKinney and his 50-year-old father, Jeffrey McKinney. Peter McKinney was initially arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, while his father faced a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The legal process that followed saw Peter McKinney's charge amended to voluntary manslaughter. In a turn of events, McKinney entered an Alford plea on July 23, 2024. This type of plea allows a defendant to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to likely secure a conviction. The court accepted the plea, and McKinney was subsequently sentenced to 59 months in prison. He is also required to register as a violent offender for 15 years following his release.
