On what was supposed to be a festive Lundi Gras in New Orleans, 21-year-old Johnell Hampton, a Black male with musical aspirations, found his life tragically cut short. It was February 20, 2023, when a brazen shooting erupted on Interstate 10, forever altering the lives of several families. Hampton was a passenger in an Uber, driven by Andrew Stiller, when their vehicle was ambushed.
The hail of bullets claimed the lives of both Hampton and Stiller at the scene.
The violence didn't end there. A stray bullet struck Kimberly Hines, an innocent bystander in a passing car, who succumbed to her injuries months later. The force of the attack caused the Uber to crash, injuring three other individuals. Eyewitnesses reported seeing four gunmen fleeing the scene in a white Nissan Sentra.
In the aftermath, the New Orleans Police Department began a relentless investigation. A significant breakthrough came in the form of modern technology. Tyree Quinn, a 35-year-old man with a criminal history, was identified as a primary suspect thanks to an ankle monitor he was wearing as a condition of his bail for a previous arrest. The electronic device placed him at the scene of the crime at the exact time of the shooting. Quinn was subsequently arrested and, in April 2025, a jury found him guilty of one count of second-degree murder and two counts of manslaughter for the deaths of Hampton, Stiller, and Hines. While one perpetrator has been brought to justice, authorities have indicated that three other suspects involved in the deadly shooting remain at large.
