Patrolman Charles Merritt, aged 50, of the New Orleans Police Department, was shot and killed on February 14, 1911. He was attempting to arrest a drunken youth who was causing a disturbance near the intersection of Camp and Poeyfarre Streets. Despite returning fire and mortally wounding the suspect, Patrolman Merritt succumbed to his injuries four days later. He had served with the New Orleans Police Department for 17 years and was survived by his wife and daughter.
