In the early morning hours of July 26, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Malik Clark was cut short in a fatal shooting in downtown Baton Rouge. The incident occurred around 2:50 a.m. on South River Road, near the Raising Cane's River Center. Clark, a young man who had graduated from Second Chance Academy and was working as a janitor, was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was remembered by his mother as a family comedian who had a love for horses.
Initial reports from the Baton Rouge Police Department suggested the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute. This belief led to the swift arrest of 23-year-old Javorie Springer on charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. At the time, it was believed that an altercation broke out between Clark and Springer, who was identified as the ex-boyfriend of a girl Clark was with at the levee.
However, the investigation took a significant turn. A grand jury later opted not to bring formal charges against Springer, and he was subsequently released. Further investigation revealed a different narrative of the events that transpired that morning. Police now allege that Clark and a 19-year-old woman, Raiyion Harris, had orchestrated a plan to rob an individual. During this alleged robbery attempt, the intended victim shot Clark.
In February 2024, Raiyion Harris was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. She faces charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery for her alleged involvement in the botched robbery that led to Malik Clark's death. The case, which initially appeared to be a crime of passion, was reclassified by authorities as a homicide resulting from a planned criminal act.
