In the late afternoon of February 25, 2022, the area near the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge was shattered by gunfire. Donte Dorsey, an 18-year-old African American male known to many as the rising local rapper TrueBleeda, was caught in the barrage of bullets. He, along with 19-year-old Clifton Lindsey, were killed in what police described as a 'highly planned' and 'targeted' drive-by shooting at the intersection of Bluebonnet Boulevard and Picardy Avenue.
Two other individuals in the same vehicle were also struck by gunfire but survived their injuries.
The brazen daylight attack left a car riddled with bullet holes and sent shockwaves through the community. Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather a calculated assault stemming from an ongoing feud between rival groups. Authorities suggested that the assailants had followed the victims' vehicle before opening fire. After the shooting, the attackers abandoned their own vehicle, which was also damaged by gunfire, and fled in a second car that was waiting to pick them up. This orchestrated escape further underscored the premeditated nature of the crime. The incident was a grim reminder of the violent undercurrents that can disrupt everyday life, turning a typical Friday afternoon into a scene of tragedy.
In the weeks that followed, the Baton Rouge Police Department worked to unravel the case. Their investigation led them to 21-year-old Demetriyon Grim, who was already in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on an unrelated charge. On April 14, 2022, Grim was arrested and booked on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon in connection with the shooting. Despite this significant development, the investigation remained active, with police indicating that other individuals were likely involved. However, the legal process took a turn when a grand jury later declined to indict Grim on the charges related to the murders of Dorsey and Lindsey, leaving the path to justice for the two teenagers and their families uncertain. The case remains a poignant and unresolved chapter in the city's struggle with gun violence.
