In the quiet morning hours of December 11, 2016, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of 37-year-old Juan Montgomery, an African American male, was tragically cut short. At approximately 9:30 AM, two men forced their way into his home on Ritterman Avenue and shot him multiple times. Montgomery succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the violent home invasion. The assailants fled before law enforcement arrived, leaving behind a community in shock and a family grappling with a profound loss.
The initial investigation was met with the perplexing question of motive, as the reason for the brutal attack remained unknown.
For nearly two years, the case progressed without a resolution, a period of uncertainty for those who knew and loved Juan Montgomery. A significant breakthrough finally came on September 27, 2018, when 36-year-old Richard James Johnson was apprehended in Dallas, Texas. His arrest was the result of a crucial tip provided to the Greater Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers, leading a collaborative team of the LSP Fugitive Task Force and the Dallas Texas Rangers to his location. Johnson was subsequently extradited to Louisiana and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Following his arrest, Richard James Johnson faced charges of first-degree murder and home invasion for his alleged role in the death of Juan Montgomery. In connection with the same case, another individual, Carlos Heard, was also charged with murder.
