In the winter of 2018, the life of 19-year-old Charvon Johnson, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. On the evening of December 4th, he was discovered behind an abandoned house in the 3000 block of Jackson Avenue, suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden violence.
In the immediate aftermath, investigators had no identified suspects and the motive for the shooting remained a mystery.
The investigation into Johnson's death continued for several months. Then, in late February 2019, a significant breakthrough occurred with the arrest of a 17-year-old male named Dayln Hynard. At the time of the shooting, Hynard was 16 years old. His arrest brought a sense of progress to the case, though the reasons behind the fatal encounter were still unclear to the public. The young suspect faced serious charges, including second-degree murder, possession of a handgun by a juvenile, and illegal use of a weapon.
As the legal process unfolded, it was determined that Hynard would be tried as an adult. More details about the circumstances leading to Johnson's death emerged. Johnson's mother revealed that her son had connected with Hynard on social media to arrange the sale of a gun. She stated that the fatal encounter was the result of a robbery, during which Hynard shot her son and stole the firearm. Hynard was also implicated in a separate robbery and carjacking. Ultimately, in May 2025, Dayln Hynard pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in the death of Charvon Johnson, as well as to conspiracy to commit robbery in the unrelated case.
