In the early morning hours of November 21, 2021, the life of 38-year-old Cedrick Parker, an African American man, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parker was out celebrating his upcoming 39th birthday with friends at the Charcoal Lounge. Little did he know, this night of celebration would end in tragedy.
The festivities turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed when gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the lounge.
Responding to the scene, Baton Rouge Police Department detectives discovered Parker inside a vehicle, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The parking areas of both the Charcoal Lounge and the neighboring Who Dat Lounge were littered with multiple gun casings, a grim testament to the violence that had unfolded. In the wake of the shooting, it was determined that four other individuals had also been shot, though their injuries were not life-threatening.
Parker's mother, Rosa Parker, was awakened by a niece with the devastating news that her son had been shot. She described him as an innocent bystander who did not go looking for trouble. A local business owner, Marcus Gaines, who arrived at his storefront later that morning, described the scene as 'a bloody, bloody scene out here.' He lamented that the person who died was an innocent bystander who caught a stray bullet.
