On the morning of July 21, 1982, Louisiana State Trooper Damon L. Robichaux was at his home in Baton Rouge when he was recalled to duty for an escort assignment. As he was preparing to leave, his revolver accidentally fell to the floor. The impact caused the weapon to discharge, and a single bullet struck the 30-year-old male trooper in the chest.
Emergency medical attention was rendered, and Trooper Robichaux was rushed into surgery.
Despite the efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries approximately two hours after the accidental shooting. At the time of his death, he had been a dedicated member of the Louisiana State Police for four years, nine months, and five days, assigned to Troop A.
The death of Trooper Robichaux was a tragic accident that occurred in the line of duty. Because of the nature of the incident, there were no suspects or arrests. He was survived by his wife and children, leaving behind a family and a law enforcement community to mourn his untimely passing. His death is remembered as a somber moment in the history of the Louisiana State Police.
