In the early hours of a Monday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of Malecah Cah Demoulin, a 23-year-old male, was cut short by a burst of gunfire. On October 25, 2021, Demoulin was in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn on Airline Highway when the fatal shooting occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim, a woman who was with him, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

launched a homicide investigation. Initial reports indicated that the motive behind the shooting was unknown, and authorities had not identified any suspects. Investigators processed the scene, which included two cars riddled with bullet holes, but no immediate arrests were made. A year before his own violent death, in November 2020, Demoulin had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Brandon Chatman. That case, along with later reports of his cousin also being killed, painted a grim picture of a cycle of violence. Two weeks after his cousin was shot, Demoulin himself was killed.
