In the late hours of a Thursday night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the sound of gunfire pierced the air. When police responded to the 3600 block of Osceola Street just before midnight on October 1, 2015, they discovered a chilling scene. An unoccupied, parked vehicle sat with its glass shattered, and blood was visible inside. A trail of blood led officers away from the car to the body of 24-year-old Monquel Yates, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
At the time, the motive for the shooting was unknown.
The investigation into the death of the young man, a male, led Baton Rouge Police to identify 18-year-old Tyler Pointer as a suspect. A warrant for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder was issued, and he was taken into custody without incident at the end of October 2015. The authorities thanked the public for their assistance in locating him. The case against Pointer would move through the legal system over the next few years.
In November 2018, then 21-year-old Tyler Pointer accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the shooting death of Monquel Yates. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to ten years in prison with credit for time already served. He also received a concurrent one-year sentence for illegal possession of stolen things. The resolution of Pointer's case, however, did not quell the lingering belief of some that others were involved. This sentiment tragically resurfaced years later when Monquel's brother, Standley Yates, was arrested in March 2024 for allegedly targeting a man he believed was responsible for his brother's 2015 murder. Standley Yates was accused of following and shooting at a car occupied by the man and his family.
