In the autumn of 2019, the life of 46-year-old Patrick Lawrence was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. On the afternoon of Wednesday, November 27th, Lawrence was inside his vehicle in the 2500 block of Osceola Street when he was shot multiple times. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, but his injuries proved to be too severe.

The investigation into the fatal shooting quickly led Baton Rouge Police detectives to two suspects. Less than 48 hours after Lawrence’s death, on November 29, 2019, authorities announced the arrests of 30-year-old Jamara Thomas and 43-year-old Cleveland Stirgus. The motive for the shooting was believed to be a dispute over a video game. Investigators contended that Thomas and Stirgus targeted Lawrence's vehicle because they believed a person who was with him had stolen the game from their apartment.
Following their arrests, Jamara Thomas was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of second-degree murder. Cleveland Stirgus was also taken into custody and booked on a charge of being a principal to second-degree murder. The swift arrests brought a sense of initial resolution to a violent crime that unfolded in the community.
