In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in May 2018, the quiet of a BREC park in Baton Rouge was shattered by the sound of gunfire. When police arrived at the scene in the 2800 block of 77th Avenue shortly before 7:20 a.m., they discovered the body of 19-year-old Douglass Chenevert IV. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly pieced together the narrative of what they believe led to the young man's demise.
It was determined that Chenevert had been at the park to conduct a drug transaction. This exchange, however, took a violent and deadly turn, ending with Chenevert being shot and killed. The incident prompted a brief lockdown at the nearby EBR Readiness Superintendent's Academy as a precautionary measure.
Later that same day, the Baton Rouge Police Department announced a significant development in the case. Two 16-year-old males were taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
