In a tragic incident on a Thursday night in New Orleans, 22-year-old Jalen Aubert, a Black male, lost his life in what police have described as an accidental shooting. The event took place on August 10, 2023, inside a residence in the 8000 block of Sheephead Street. Aubert was in a bedroom with another 22-year-old, Anthony Wise, where they were reportedly cleaning a firearm.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, the gun discharged accidentally during the cleaning process.
A single shot struck Aubert in the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office later officially identified Jalen Aubert as the deceased.
In the aftermath of the fatal incident, Anthony Wise was taken into custody. He was arrested the day after the shooting and has been charged with negligent homicide in connection with Aubert's death. The case has been characterized by law enforcement as an unfortunate accident rather than a malicious act.
