In a quiet neighborhood in Lafayette, Louisiana, a verbal dispute on November 27, 2023, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 38-year-old Colby Mitchell. The male victim was involved in an argument with another man outside a home in the 200 block of Felicie Drive. The situation took a violent turn when one of the men involved in the altercation allegedly drew a firearm and shot Mitchell.
The proximity of the incident to Lafayette High School prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order for the safety of students and staff.
Responding officers from the Lafayette Police Department discovered Mitchell critically wounded at the scene and immediately rendered medical aid before he was transported to a local hospital. The alleged shooter, identified as 45-year-old James Guillory of Lafayette, was apprehended by police at the scene of the crime. Guillory was taken into custody and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
For several weeks, Colby Mitchell fought for his life. However, on December 20, 2023, he succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the shooting. Following Mitchell's death, the charges against James Guillory were upgraded to second-degree murder. Guillory remains incarcerated as he awaits a future court date.
