His unexpected death stemmed from what has been described as a senseless misunderstanding that escalated into a fatal altercation.
The incident unfolded at the Woodspring Suites hotel located on Hugh Wallis Road. According to investigators, Francis was involved in a dispute with another man shortly before the fatal shooting occurred. Lafayette Police were called to the hotel at approximately 2:20 p.m., where they discovered Francis deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound. The suddenness of his passing left his family unprepared for the financial burden of a funeral, as he did not have life insurance coverage. In the wake of the shooting, the Lafayette Police Department quickly identified a suspect, leading to an arrest in connection with the homicide. The individual taken into custody was 39-year-old Kyle Jagneaux, also a resident of Lafayette. It was later confirmed that Jagneaux was a former officer with the Lafayette Police Department, although he was not serving in that capacity at the time of the incident. The investigation indicated that the shooting followed an altercation between Jagneaux and Francis.
Following his arrest, Kyle Jagneaux was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. He has been charged with one count of manslaughter in the death of Phillip Francis Jr. The bond for Jagneaux was set at $50,000 as the legal proceedings in the case commenced.
