In the wake of a University of Louisiana homecoming game, the festive atmosphere in Lafayette was shattered by gunfire that erupted outside KOK Wings and Things. In the chaos of that November 9, 2024, evening, 24-year-old Jamir Carmouche, a respected young man known to his loved ones as 'Tookie,' 'Slime,' or '2x,' was tragically killed. He was a graduate of Acadiana High School's Class of 2018 and had earned a certificate as an Auto Mechanic Technician from SLCC before obtaining his CDL to become a truck driver. Friends and family remember him as a happy and respectable person who enjoyed riding his four-wheeler, playing video games, and spending time with those he cared about.
The shooting, which also claimed the life of 26-year-old Corey Mouton, sent shockwaves through the community. Authorities later revealed that Mouton was the intended target of the attack, and Carmouche, along with two other injured individuals, were innocent bystanders caught in the deadly crossfire. The incident prompted an outpouring of grief and a community-wide call to end gun violence. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered for a balloon release to honor Jamir's memory, sharing stories and pleading for peace in their city.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrests of two suspects from St. Martinville. Dylon Doucet, 26, and Trevon Charles, also 26, were taken into custody by the Lafayette Police Department. Both men face serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, as they are accused of perpetrating the violence that cut short two young lives and left a community in mourning.
