In the summer of 2014, the life of 37-year-old Arthella James Moore was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on Foch Street in Lafayette, Louisiana. On the evening of July 28th, Moore was shot and subsequently died from his injuries, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with a sudden and violent loss.
The investigation into the death of the Black male quickly led Lafayette Police to identify three suspects.
Within days of the shooting, arrest warrants were issued, and the trio was apprehended. The individuals taken into custody were Carlos Heard, Lajarvis Harmon, and Armondee Rubin. All three men were charged with second-degree murder in connection with Moore's death, suggesting a concerted action that led to the fatal outcome.
Following their arrests, the legal process began to unfold. In August 2014, a grand jury formally indicted Heard, Harmon, and Rubin on the charge of second-degree murder, a significant step indicating that the prosecuting authority believed there was sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial. This moved the case from the initial investigation and arrest phase into the judicial system, where the question of their guilt or innocence would be determined. The indictment underscored the gravity of the allegations and set the stage for a legal battle over the events that transpired on that fateful July evening.
