On New Year's Day in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a tragic story began to unfold with the death of 15-year-old Ramide Cosey. The male teen, a freshman and football player at Istrouma High School, was walking with three other juveniles in the 4600 block of West Brookstown Drive on January 1, 2024, when a vehicle passed by and unleashed a spray of gunfire. Cosey was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene, while the other three youths sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
The initial investigation into the early afternoon shooting left the motive and suspects unknown. The Baton Rouge Police Department's Homicide Detectives began piecing together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their efforts, in conjunction with the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force, led to a significant development nearly two months later. On February 27, 2024, three juvenile suspects were taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
The three unnamed juveniles were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. However, the legal proceedings took a turn when the case was presented to a grand jury. In a decision that left the case unresolved, the grand jury declined to indict at least two of the teens, Treyvon Collins and Eddie Monroe, who were subsequently released in September after months of being jailed. The identity of the third juvenile arrested has not been publicly disclosed. The lack of an indictment meant the case against Collins and Monroe did not move forward at that time.
