In the early morning hours of February 28, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of an Underwood Drive residence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tragically ending the life of 29-year-old Destiny Shana Buckley. Two other women were also struck by bullets during the violent encounter and were subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries, which ranged from non-life-threatening to life-threatening.
The incident, which was later described by authorities as domestic in nature, left a community in mourning and a family seeking answers.
The investigation into the fatal shooting quickly focused on identifying a suspect. The initial hours of the inquiry were marked by an absence of a clear motive or a named person of interest. However, investigators with the Baton Rouge Police Homicide Division worked diligently to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. Their efforts soon pointed toward an individual who had been present at the scene and was known to the victims. An argument is believed to have preceded the gunfire, after which the shooter fled the location, sparking a manhunt.
Less than a week after the shooting, on March 6, 2024, law enforcement located and apprehended the suspected gunman. Darrius Howard, 23, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals task force in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was initially booked into the Oklahoma City Detention Center as a fugitive from justice before being extradited back to Louisiana to face charges for his alleged role in the shooting. Upon his return to Baton Rouge, Howard was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon.
