In the spring of 2015, a chilling story of betrayal and greed unfolded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, culminating in the tragic death of 54-year-old Taherah Ghassemi. An Iranian-American woman, she was a mother who had recently emerged from a contentious divorce, looking forward to a new chapter in her life. That chapter was brutally cut short on the evening of April 11, 2015, when she vanished from the home she shared with her son.
Her son returned home to find a pot of rice burning on the stove and his mother's car missing. Initially, he thought she might be with a friend, but as time passed with no word, a sense of dread began to grow. His concern turned to alarm when he discovered her purse and identification were still in the house. A few hours after she was reported missing, her car was found miles away, completely destroyed by fire.
The investigation into her disappearance took a grim turn about a month later, on May 16, 2015, when her body was discovered. She was found wrapped in a comforter and buried in a shallow grave in a remote, wooded area in St. Helena Parish. An autopsy would later confirm that Taherah Ghassemi had died from a gunshot wound to the head. As detectives pieced together the evidence, a sinister plot began to emerge, one that pointed not to a random act of violence, but to a calculated murder-for-hire scheme. The mastermind, investigators concluded, was the man she had once been married to, her ex-husband, Hamid Ghassemi, a 64-year-old local car dealer.
The motive for this heinous act was rooted in financial animosity. The couple's recent divorce had resulted in a settlement that awarded Taherah Ghassemi $1 million and two of her ex-husband's homes. To avoid this payment, prosecutors argued that Hamid Ghassemi hired three men to kill her. He paid Daniel Richter, a former employee, along with Tyler Lee Ashpaugh and Skyler Williams, a total of $10,000 to carry out the murder. The three men kidnapped Taherah from her home, injected her with a substance to subdue her, and drove her to the secluded location. There, after she began to regain consciousness, she was shot and buried.
All four men were eventually arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder. The legal proceedings brought some measure of justice for Taherah's family. In August 2023, after a lengthy trial, Hamid Ghassemi was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He died in prison in November 2024. Of the three men he hired, Daniel Richter and Skyler Williams both pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were each sentenced to 30 years in prison. Tyler Lee Ashpaugh, the man believed to have fired the fatal shot, died of a fentanyl overdose in prison in January 2023 while awaiting sentencing. The case left a lasting scar on the community, a somber tale of a life cut short by a plot born from greed and a profound betrayal.
