Corporal Betty Dunn Smothers, aged 36, was a dedicated officer with the Baton Rouge City Police Department. On January 7, 1993, while moonlighting as a security guard, she was fatally shot in an ambush attack. Smothers was in uniform and driving a marked patrol car when she and a grocery store manager went to a bank to make a night deposit. As they sat in the patrol car, three suspects approached and opened fire, fatally wounding Smothers and injuring the manager.
