In the quiet community of Central, just outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a tragedy unfolded that would leave a family shattered and a community in shock. Tannya Moreau, a 25-year-old mother of three, was found dead in her home on Blackwater Road on February 7, 2021. The initial report to authorities suggested a possible suicide, a narrative that would soon be unraveled by the diligent work of investigators.
Tannya’s husband, Luke Moreau, was present at the scene when deputies arrived. He was discovered covered in blood and speaking with a 911 operator, to whom he had reported that 'there's been an accident.' He told detectives that he and his wife had been arguing, and as he was leaving their home, he heard a single gunshot. The weapon was later found in the front yard of the residence they shared with their three young children, who were all inside the house at the time of the incident.
Initially, Luke Moreau was released from custody as the forensic investigation continued. However, the course of the investigation took a sharp turn when autopsy and forensic evidence revealed that the gunshot wound to Tannya’s head could not have been self-inflicted. This crucial finding shifted the case from a potential suicide to a homicide investigation. Weeks after his wife's death, Luke Moreau was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Friends and family remembered Tannya as a beautiful woman who deeply loved her children, and some reports suggested she had been a victim of domestic abuse.
In July 2022, Luke Moreau pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. Several months later, in January 2023, he was sentenced to 36 years in prison for the killing of his wife. The tragic death of Tannya Moreau left her three children, aged four, two, and six months at the time, without their mother, and their grandparents began a fight for their custody.
